The Need for a Semantic Hygiene in Theology
I think there's certainly a need for what my colleague Alan Torrance calls a kind of semantic hygiene that in much theological discussion. I'm the kind of person who thinks that theology is true that up to true themed and so for me this kind of discussion with the psychologists is a really potentially fruitful and important one. It will force the theologians to examine the extent to which arguments and their claims are susceptible to empirically testable data. That's a good thing it seems to me because it will keep us honest in the sorts of claims that we make. And as I said earlier I don't think that's something that theologians should be afraid of.
