What Is an Omer?

Exodus 1636 says an Omer is a tenth of an Ephah. The Ephah is the more common measurement in the Old Testament used over 30 times. It seems that the story of Omer's of manna being gathered preserves something of the past, maybe the deep past from the point of view of later biblical writer.
