Introduction
Nate Heggie, host of the NHPR podcast outside in a show about the natural world and how we use it. In 1942 Thomas Lee Cosby is this chicken farmer in South Carolina. He lives less than half a mile from a municipal airport which wasn't a big deal until the US military leased the airport in 1942. 150 of his chickens are so freaked out by the lights and the noise that when the planes fly over they literally throw themselves into the walls and fright and die.
