The smithsonian told me that they just wouldn't go through objects and decide what deserved to be saved after a disaster. The director of the national museum of brazil said, six months into his tenure, the museum burnt down on a sunday evening. He stepped off a playn eh'd been away for the week end, and that was it. Brazil's national museum, which had about 20 million objects in it, burnt down in a matter of hours. Almost all those objects were lost. If it's lost in this fire, it's lost to the world. It can't be replaced.
