The Value of Existential Risk Mitigation
David Wheeler's paper looked at relationship between astronomical value and pessimism about existential risk. He found that the more pessimistic you are, the less valuable it is to reduce risks. But if we have a long time of perils followed by a very low level of risk thereafter, there can be large value on this model. And so either we'd want to be a little bit less pessimistic about existential risk or we'd have to drop some of the high valuations we put on existential risk mitigation.
