The Shinsengumi and the Loyalists in Kyoto
A group of Loyalists were staying at the Inn in Kyoto. They were implicated in a plot to kidnap Emperor Kome and set fire to Kyoto. The Shinsengumi found them, hold up in the Ikedaya, and after 2 hours of hard fighting brought the Loyalist group down. This was a massive victory and a political coup for Kondo Isami and the ShinsEngumi. In the aftermath, Matsudairakata Mori hugely expanded the group to over 200 members,. making it a sizable presence in Kyoto.
