In the 18 fifties, low status chinese laborers were used to do labor all across north america. A lot of them actually didn't even sign up for what they ended up doing. In march 18 60, a thousand slaves from china mutinied on the ship the norway,. And what they did was they lit fires under each of the portholes to force open the hatches. They got out. The crew abandoned the ship. It's really kind of wild history, very recent to the 18 Fifties, less than 200 years ago.
