There's a lot of different causes and the actual site of the increased portal resistance depends on the etiology. This is actually defined as a hepatic vein pressure gradient, HVPG, greater than 6 millimeters of mercury. So if you have increased portal hypertension, this will result in portal systemic venous coladarols, acides, hepatic encephalopathy, splintomegaly.
