The Irony of Jesus Descended to Hell

I was never taught that he went to literal hell. Jesus descended to hell to do battle with Satan. And that's the great irony, or I don't even exactly know what irony means. Some people believe he did some preaching while he was down there and then rose from the grave. There's two different places in the Bible where it says this.
