What Are Gap Junctions?
A gap junction is a series of physical connections between the cytoplasm of adjacent cells. These are mostly useful to ensure that you have coordination or rhythmic timing of electrical impulses between nearby cells. So these are used in the heart muscle for example where you need to have coordinated rhythmic firing of all of the cells at a very similar time. If you have uncoordinated firing then you get a rhythmic or that's very dangerous.
