The Kingdom of Piedmont Sardinia

South of the Papal States was the largest political unit in Italy, the Kingdom of the Two Sissiles. Piedmont Sardinia briefly entered into our story during Bonaparte's early Italian campaigns. They were the ones who had so ably held back the French in the Backwater Italian theater of the French Revolutionary Wars. The elevation of Pope Pius IX is a very big deal and we will discuss him in detail when we get into the actual course of the revolutions of 1848.
