The Role of Meritocracy in Employment

I think the first thing to say is that proponents of affirmative action have an interest in promoting a policy that is in many ways anti-meritocratic. I don't think there's any sort of direct challenge at least in what we're talking about to this kind of meritocracy in hiring which also extends to things like meritocracy in awarding contracts or in otherwise allocating resources in the workforce. It's not obvious that meritocracy as currently employed through the use of high school grades or standardized tests is the optimal way for universities to find those kids who will most benefit from super selective schools such as Berkeley, UCLA and Cal Poly.
