As school ended that spring, the United States entered World War I. He took a job selling coffee beans and novelty store to door. His parents objected strenuously, but he finally talked them into letting him join up as a Red Cross ambulance driver. In my company, which assembled in Connecticut for training, was another fellow who had lied about his age to get in. Whenever we had time off and went out on town to chase girls, he stayed in camp drawing pictures.
