Is There Something Inherently Unpleasant About High Frequencies?

The sound of chalk on a blackboard makes Catherine flinch. For Michelle, it's the noise of her kids scribbling with felt tip pens. A study at UCL found that frequencies between about 2,000 and 5,000 hertz are particularly likely to create that response in people. And what's interesting is that you can see different brain activity in people when they're experiencing quite unpleasant sounds.
