Doctors used to work in teams. But as there became fewer and fewer doctors, the team structure sort of disappeared. So suddenly you're in charge of a whole ward and no one's told you how to do it. The stakes are very high when that thing is doing an operation for the first time unsupervised. It's not so much as being out of your depth so much as you always have to in any job do a something for thefirst time. There's certainly no financial payoff and you don't do it for the money. The payoff, the reward is the feeling you get at the end of the day. I had very complicated emotions about the job of the entire time.
