The History of the Ismia Temple
In 582 BC, the Ismia games were opened to Panhellenic participation in honor of Poseidon. A number of other gods were worshipped at the sanctuary, including Amphitridi and Palamon. When the archaic temple burned, it was replaced with an even larger doric temple which stood until late antiquity. An interesting and unusual feature of the sanctuary is a pair of underground, man-made caves designed to serve as dining rooms.
