Our Love Is All We Have
This final verse is a great example of another powerful song writing tool, that of drawing out a simple phrase and in the process, making it dramatically more impactful. The lyric here is as simple as it is powerful. Our love is all we have. That's a profound statement, but also a very short and simple one. But by drawing it out and by repeating it tweedy makes it clear just how important it is to the overall thrust of the song. After all that we've been through, the tears and sad songs, the apocalyptic damage and bitter melodies, our love is allWe have.
Few lyricists have Jeff Tweedy's ability to fluidly shift between plainspoken emotion and abstract imagery. The Wilco frontman has been writing beautiful, beguiling songs for more than three decades, and there is no way to pin down what any of them "means." There's only what they mean to you, right then, in the moment, as you listen to them.
That's certainly true of "Jesus, Etc." one of many standout tracks off of Wilco's groundbreaking 2001 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. On this episode, Kirk explores some of the writing and arrangement techniques that help make this song, and all of Tweedy's songs, so special.
