The Rise and Fall of Russia
In the early 17th century, Russia was so weak and so unimportant to European affairs. Many Western European powers didn't even bother sending a permanent ambassador to the Russian court. The perception of Russia as a backwards place stubbornly lingered long after it was no longer accurate. After Britain, Russia is probably more responsible than any other nation for defeating Napoleon.
