There was a kind of, like a mimetic relationship between jews in the black freedom movement and zionis. A lot of jewish activists who wanted to do their own version of black power were attracted to the masculinity of it and the militancy. He experiences that affair as another failure of his ability to know himself and to be true. And so i think that his period of jewish religious and emotional dedication was totally bound up with this period of time, which he subsequently thought of as a kindof a weakness.
