There was all the sort of blowback to the congress government about why India was engaging in this kind of alliance with sadhus but on the other hand Nehru didn't put a stop to him. In this way he shows himself not to be really anti-religion at all that he is sort of engaging with them engaging with Indians on the terrain that they would like even though he's not very comfortable with it and you can imagine him doing a big I told you so finger wag in 1966 by which time he had died.
