Soaring Prices and Sugar Shortages Are Pushing Up Candy Companies Costs
Soaring prices and sugar shortages have makers of candy canes peanut brittle and lollipops feeling sour. Candy producers said the rule of problem lies with US agriculture policy requiring that at least 85% of US sugar purchases come from domestic processors. Sugar farmers in process to say the policy shares ample supply and protects farmers livelihoods. They say they compete against subsidized sugars offered by foreign competitors at artificially low rates.
