The great influenza is still, by most measures, even to day, the worst pandemic we have record of. But at the time, we didn't know why that was so dangerous. The next pando which came along in two thousand and nine blind sigded us because it tweaked a whole set of different features of varus - not cropped up in tis study. So although we learnt some of the ways in which influenza could adapt to humans, wedidn't spot all of them.
