The Neocortex Models the Environment

The grid cells and the play cells learn a model of the environment. And it's referenced in the reference frame of the environment, which is relative to where I am. They build this model of the world using a reference thing that's relative to the room, not to me. This is why I can enter a room that have been, I've been in before, but I can enter from a new direction or stand in a new location.
