The Role of String Theory in Physics

Theory of everything is expected to inherit virtually its entire explanatory structure from existing theories, says David Wheeler. There are two theories in physics which are considerably deeper than all others - general relativity and quantum theory. Between them they provide the detailed explanatory and formal framework within which all other theories in modern physics are expressed. They contain overarching physical principles towhich all other theories conform. A unification of general relativity andQuantum Theory to give a quantum theory of gravity has been a major quest of theoretical physicists for several decades.
