Casefile True Crime
The Memory of John Peel
John Peel was found guilty of murder in 1986. The case rested on the testimony of 150 or so people who took the stand. A memory expert testified that human memories are not perfect recordings of past events and can be manipulated over time. Jurors deliberated for six days, but were unable to regiver it. Most were in favor of acquitting John Peel, though a few wanted to convict. Realising they were hopelessly deadlocked, the judge declared a mistrial.
