I was very guilty of calling Ukraine the Ukraine. And I don't honestly know exactly where I picked it up from, but it's sort of thinking of it being a former Soviet state and all that kind of stuff. The reason for that is so in Russian, you say, not Ukraine. So you use a different preposition to refer to it.
