Why couldn't God have just waited another like 20 years to let a generation die off so that it could just be joyous and enthusiastic and not mixed? We see that that's a tool that God uses at other times. The whole Old Testament begs for the new covenant, the new deal that happens with Jesus who comes and lives a sinless life and goes to the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of humanity.
