Pjorda Ivanovich's Middle Course
Pjorda Ivanovich went to the widow's room of his colleague. He entered feeling uncertain what he would have to do. On entering the room he began crossing himself and making a slight movement resembling a bow. The dead man lay, as dead men always lie, in a specially heavy way with the head forever bowed on the pillow. His yellow wax and brow, with bald patches over his sunken temples, was thrust up in the way peculiar to the dead.
