The technique involves cutting the tooth root in half. The goal is to remove essentially three quarters of the root and just leave a shell on the labial side. You have to be very careful when you are extracting the palatal half of the root. And I use a combination of high speed hand pieces, but also towards the end of the shaping procedure, I actually utilize tapered implant drills or lateral cutting drills.
