Napoleon often displayed compassion for the wounded. Contrary to his popular image as a coldly calculating man of war, bonaparte had a real aversion to bloodshed and en felt remorse about the men he sent to their deaths. It's actually more chilling to continue using war as a tool of foreign policy despite having these feelings at the sight of a battlefield. But as he often did, napoleon simply lived with the contradiction. His men were not so scrupulous. They lit fires, got drunk and sang long into the night as they celebrated.
