Three things happened in 1979 which would come to define global events for the next four decades. The Iranian Revolution with the return of Ayatollah Khomeini turned it into an Islamic revolution and turns Iran into an Islamic Republic. Second event is the siege of the Holy Mosque in Mecca by Saudi Salats who want the kingdom to be even more conservative, less open to the West. And the third event is the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. These events which are at the onset not linked become completely interlinked and launch these new dynamics. They change society, they change art and culture and even what people watch on television.
