The History of Heart Burial

The remains of Louis the 9th of France and a number of his relatives who perished on the ill-fated crusade in Egypt were brought back to France in this fashion. A paper by Walsh argues that it was explicitly about boiling crusaders to bring their bones home from foreign lands. Some types of evisceration, including removal and separate treatment of the heart as well as other internal organs may have been practical too.
