What Is Social Infrastructure?
Social infrastructure is a set of physical places and institutions that shape our social life. It's just as real as the infrastructure for water or for power or for communications, but we haven't been able to see it because we don't have a concept for it. The first time I thought about social infrastructure was when I was a graduate student doing a research project on a heatwave in Chicago. They were safer even than the most affluent neighborhoods on the north side.
