The Importance of Roomy Cars in the History of Black Families

African Americans used to buy really big roomy cars and reliable cars because they didn't want to get stuck someplace and have a broken down car in a place that was dangerous for them. It was also important because African Americans were redlined in their neighborhoods. Black neighborhoods were redlined which meant you could not necessarily buy a house. And if you couldn't put your disposable income into a house, you put it in your next largest purchase - the car.
