The History of Ukranian Literature

russia and ukraine share a lot of overlapping history, going back to the establishment of kiven rus in the late ninth century. But over the centuries, the nations, peoples and ethnic groups that would form these countries as we know them went through very different trajectories. What's now ukraine was repeatedly divided up and assigned to other nations and empires, including poland, lithuania and the austro hungarian empire. Aside from its westernmost regions, most of ukraine became part of the russian empire in 17 93. Regardless of which nation or empire they were considered to be living in, ukranians had their own ethnic and cultural identity.
