CHAPTER

How Did We Invent the Chicken?

Humans and chickens started to live together about 12,000 years ago. The chicken ancestor is a bird called the Red Jungle Fowl that lives in Southeast Asian countryside. But farming doesn't start in that region for another 2,000 years after there. So what's happening? Why are we bother eating, even looking after chickens when we're not eating them or we're not using the eggs? Well, wild jungle fowl don't really lay that many eggs. You might get 12 a year from a wild junglefowl. That wouldn't have been the initial reason that we can't do that.
