The CNT, the National Confederation of Labor, was set up as an anarchist trade union in 1910. In 1923 a coup by right wing prima de Rivera outlawed the CNT and brutally tried to repress any kind of struggles. Under the second Spanish Republic they took a less hard line approach on peasants and workers. But peasants and workers used this kind of democratic space to step up their demands. We were well aware that even without a civil war, fascism could come to power in Spain. And this is what led us to strike. You must realize that this wasn't just another strike, for things like wages or better working conditions. This was a revolutionary strike, and our aim was to
