The CNT, the National Confederation of Labor, was set up as an anarchist trade union in 1910. In 1923 a coup by right wing prima de Rivera outlawed the CNT and brutally tried to repress any kind of struggles. Under the second Spanish Republic they took a less hard line approach on peasants and workers. But peasants and workers used this kind of democratic space to step up their demands. We were well aware that even without a civil war, fascism could come to power in Spain. And this is what led us to strike.
