Murder and the Difficulty of Distinguishing Normans and Englishmen
This chapter discusses the issue of murder after the Norman Conquest and the difficulty in distinguishing Normans from Englishmen. The Exchequer, the Tax Collection Office, tried to identify the murderers in order to stop the killings. If the killer couldn't be found, the whole local community would be punished with a fine, which had to be paid to the Exchequer.
