The Violence of the Civil War in Spain

The early months of the Spanish Civil War saw a lot of violence against civilians. The nationalists felt that they needed to take full control over areas that did not initially support their cause. This created an impetus to remove whatever support structures the republic still had among the populace in these areas. Even a slight suspicion of having possibly voted for the popular front was enough to, at the very least, get questioned and arrested or even killed.
