The Dangers of Western Sanctions on Niger
Bles Campore was an ally of the US. He killed Thomas Sankara and then he ruled basically as a dictator from 1987 until 2014 in a series of rigged elections. So that is one of the dangers of the situation happening now. Yes, there are these nationalist anti-imperialist governments that have come to power in West Africa. But because they came to power through military coups, if a right-wing military officer overthrows the left-wing regime, then they can sometimes rule with Western support for decades. That's exactly what happened during the first Cold War. And there is the possibility of that happening today.
