The Importance of Zajal in Sufi Poetry

Most of the famous poets, like Ibn Al-Fadil and Ibn Al-Abi, all wrote their poetry in classical Arabic. By the later Middle Ages, this norm was starting to be challenged by some. In Al-Andalus, there had started to appear new forms of poetry that broke with the classical magical forms. A new genre called mawasha appeared and quickly became very popular. Ashushdi was maybe the first, or at least certainly one of the first, to adopt both the mawasha and zajal forms into his Sufi poetry and songs.
