Chapin was a control freak and Nellie never challenged that control, so it was easy for him to dote on her. When he even perceived that anyone else was challenging that control, he would fly into like a complete fit of rage. He had untreated mental health issues from the very earliest things in his life which is not excuse than murdering his wife.
