Historian phoebe young talks to sacha lily about her book, camping grounds, public nature in american life. Young: In the years after the civil war, a union veterans in particular, begin to kind of process their memories of the war. And so this becomes a vehicle both for kind of a reunion, a rejoining with friends, ofreconstituting a sense of community. But it was really the community that they were after in those social relations.
