In the 1600s, Robert Hook set his sights on testing Galen's hypothesis that the act of breathing was necessary for circulation. He used bellows to create a constant flow of air into the lungs and observed what happened when he stopped. And quote, with the screwsome experiment, Hook showed that it was indeed airflow into the lungs that wasnecessary for circulation and thus life.
