Decartes and the Book of the World

In 16 18, descartes departed for the netherlands where he spent 15 months in military service under prince maurice. From here on in life, descarte's reputation began to spread among the intellectual circles and soon he was meeting scholars from all sorts of backgrounds. During this time, while apparently travelling europe with no stable base of operations, he invented analytic geometry. He became enamored with rosocrucianism, a form of aesoteric christianity influenced by hermetic philosophy and the esoteric teachings of the alchemists. Like the rosicrucians, he lived alone and in seclusion, changed his residence often.
