During the chaos, they used that as a moment to make their way to firminos. melcor was able to steal the silmerils and then they escaped north. Her darkness, it is said, was so all encompassing that that's how they escaped. It covered their escape. They couldn't be followed because her darkness obscured the light of just anybody being able to follow them. This imagery is amazing when you try to picture what it must have been like. And we'll talk about that another time.
