Renzo is trying to seize life by the horns. He makes a mess of it, yet you have a kind of thrill as you accompany him through the streets of Milan and then subsequently of Monta or wherever he ends up. Whereas with Lucia, she is more so abandoned to the providence of God. She occupies a more passive role, but even that is a kind of exercise of agency. It's something over which we need abandon ourselves if we're going to experience it in its fullness. The church I think in its hierarchy ought to be like stride for stride, matching the leaders of the world with instead of just pure power,. But with grace and dignity and calling them out.
