Philosophy Bites with Nigel Warburton and David Edmonds. Loneliness is a kind of suffering that has something to do with other people. You can be lonely even when there are other people around, says Nigel. It's not a physical pain loneliness - fMRI studies show the part of the brain responsible for physical pain lit up in those who were lonely. But it does have health effects akin to being highly stressed which could lead to stroke or blood pressure problems.
