"My father didn't act the way he did just out of nowhere, right? You know, a lot of racism informed the way that he thought men, black men, should be. He didn't want you to be soft in a world that was going to be harsh with you," she says. "i can't help wishing that there was a way that he could have learned who i was as a person and then may be teaching me how to properly navigate the world."

Brian Broome is a poet, screenwriter, and instructor in the Writing Program at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a finalist in The Moth storytelling competition and won the grand prize in Carnegie Mellon University’s Martin Luther King’s Writing Awards.
