The Fear of Discipline in Schooling

The schools that enroll most of our black and brown students are structured in such a way that behavioral standards expectations are defined far more in terms of compliance. The primary objective is not one of engagement right it's one that we can get away with having non engaging curriculum, but we can keep students seated for fear of getting sent home. And so that's why you have a lot of scholars who are really trying to think through and push back against this narrow conception of doing school That's rooted primarily in students doing well academically because you can have some high achieving students who are not good people.
